Not many producers are as unique as Skress, and fewer have had the amazing last few months he has. He sat down with UVC to tell all about his journey so far and what’s in store for the rest of 2019.

Tell me about your upbringing? What has that been like for you?

I’m 19 now, but I’m from a small town on the south coast of South Africa. I feel very blessed to have been brought up in the family I was brought up in. My parents always supported me in everything but i feel like they wanted to me rather pursue a career in sports or something other than music in the beginning but like yeah my upbringing was good I’ll forever be grateful for my childhood and how I grew up.

So you had a solid upbringing, tell me about your musical influences early on? Who were you listening to when you were younger?

When I was younger it was mostly just alternative rock in the beginning just listening to shit with my dad. But I always loved emotion in songs, like I only used to fuck with the sad shit. I think it’s because those were like the strongest feelings the shit would give me.

So when did you eventually take up music yourself and actually start creating/producing?

So when I was like 11-12 I had FL Studio and GarageBand on an iPad and I used to mess around on there because I was so interested in how music was created. Eventually, I would move to GarageBand on a Mac when I was like 12-13 and then when I was like 15 I got Logic.

When did you decide you wanted to take music seriously and start producing for artists?

I feel like I always wanted to do that because I felt crazy passionate about it but at the same time it felt like a long shot like no one around me was on this type of shit. Like there’s a music scene in South Africa but it’s very small and very different to the stuff I wanted to make and what I was inspired by, so I never really had no one in the same position as me so when I eventually got my first placement ever which was Lil Tracy and people started wanting to work it was crazy to me.

You mentioned that everyone wanted to work with you after you Tracy placement, What are some of your favorite songs you’ve been apart of?

Everything has been amazing to be apart of and it’s like you gotta try to stay working and looking to grow. You also have to continue to do better but you sometimes end up taking it for granted. Like a year ago I would have never imagined I would’ve been able to work with all these crazy talented people who I was fans of. Bacteria with Tracy will always be the most special honestly but I can’t really say I have a favorite besides that.

You have such a good mindset for your age and you keep progressing it’s crazy to watch. Who are some artists you’d like to work with in the future? Big or small?

There are literally so many I would never be able to name them all. I think if I had to name a person though I would say Bobby Raps.

Moving on to your later days when did you decide to join artists groups like Iced Out Angels and Neilaworld? How did those relationships come about?

So I started talking to Mochila in some random group chat on Instagram and eventually we started making music together and he asked me to join Iced Out Angels and I was super down to be apart of that and I had already worked with some of the guys in IOA before that. Neilaworld was a few months later after getting a few more placements and working with some of the members in Neila like Fadedblackid and Lukrative. Fbk hit me up and asked me to join. I’m so grateful to be involved and affiliate with these people.

What are your plans for the rest of 2019 considering we only have a few months left?

I’m actually starting to study in a few weeks at a music school in London and then just make as much music as I can and carry on winning with the gang.

What is the idea behind your alias? Is there a story on how you got it?

Yeah, so I really wanted my name to mean something to me and it took me the longest time to figure out a name I’d like. so I thought it should just relate to who I am. and I worry so much about everything when I do anything I’m always stressed about the stupidest shit ever like. People might say this is cliché or whatever but the way I stress over small things is literally so stupid. Shit is honestly the worst side of my personality and I lack confidence in almost everything I do no matter how much I try to forget about shit and just be impulsive I always end up overthinking. As much as I hate it I thought to myself that that shit is like the biggest part of me as well. I stress so much about making the best music I can and making sure I’m working hard and pushing my boundaries and the stress and shit keeps me in order which keeps me going. so it’s a blessing and a curse but feel like a curse most of the time.

Anxiety and types of overthinking can either make or break you like you said, but using it as motivation is such a key. Music aside for a moment, what do you when you aren’t creating or making music? What keeps you sane?

That’s a hard one for me. lately I have just been at home as I haven’t started school yet so really I just been locking in and making as much music as I can but I don’t know I love spending time with my family. and friends. However, most of my friends where i’m from are at university. I guess I really fuck with movies lol. I feel like I’d love to be able to be involved in creating a film like that shit inspires me to make music too sometimes it’s crazy.

Tell me about your goals in music, what do you want to achieve the most from your career?

Definitely just to be able to do what I love as a job and make a living off of it.

If there was one thing you could change about the current underground scene what would it be?

I love the underground for being the place where people invent new things and ideas but it definitely has its bad sides. Like at the end of the day it’s a lot of kids trying to do what they love but I wish there was a little less hate and people judging other people’s music instead of focusing on themselves. Like, let people make whatever they want to make and in the end if it’s good music it’s good music.

If you got rich from music what would be the first thing you would do?

If I ever got really rich off anything I would just make sure my family is straight and my close friends at first and then clothes after that lmao.

Who is in your top 5 dead or alive?

This is a crazy one and they gotta be no order because I could never do order lmao. But would probably be Corbin, Snow Patrol, Linkin Park , and damn I gotta say Timbaland and Wyclef Jean maybe. There’s honestly too many amazing artists to have just 5 out of like 100 favorites lol.

Any last words of motivation or shout-outs?

Damn, I think I’d just like to say thank you for the interview. As well as thanks so much to anyone who shows any type of support I for real love y’all.
